When Samuel Whang and his family immigrated from Korea to Los Angeles in 1967, his mother complained that she could not find great tasting soybean paste (doenjang) to cook her traditional Korean dishes. Samuel and his brothers began making the ingredient in their own home using their family’s time-honored methods. Knowing that other families in the area would be lacking similar necessities, Samuel’s wife, Sue brought a sample down to the local Korean market. It was so tremendously popular that operations quickly expanded and the couple created and established Soo Boc Food in 1974. Soo Boc Food manufactures authentic products essential to Korean cuisine such as sesame oil, soybean paste and soy sauce. These goods have met and satisfied the palatable needs of the Korean American community in California for over 50 years.
Born and raised in Southern California with a passion for food, Debby Whang is building on the legacy her father built. She is committed to continuing her family's recipes and values of striving to create high quality, great tasting products.
